Bog Oak Bird Cane

$900.00

Ready to take flight? This bird cane is made out of Ukrainian Bog Oak. This wood is approximately 5,000 years old! Wood like this is called "sinker" wood. An oak tree lives a typical life span but when it dies and falls it is covered in peat moss or falls into a bog, both of which create an oxygen deprived environment that perfectly preserves the wood. But the oak does absorb minerals from its surroundings and the result after thousands of years is a dark color. This bog oak is a dark warm grey. Ancient wood like this is very rare and difficult to find and is far more labor intensive to harvest than a standing tree. Despite being a non-renewable resource, ancient wood can actually be the most environmentally friendly timber available, no trees had to be cut down! The divider is a different ancient sinker wood, its red gum from Australia with a strong curl figure. In bright light its grain and chatoyance can be seen. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
