Ancient Bog Oak and Mammoth Staff

$1,500.00

This tall hiking staff is a unique combination of rugged practicality and tasteful artistry wrapped up in fine craftsmanship. The staff is bog oak from Ukraine, an ancient wood that is around 5-7 thousand year old. It’s regular oak wood in every respect except that it has been buried in the bottom of a bog for thousands of years, slowly being stained a dark grey color from minerals in the water. But the bog is also an excellent preserver, its oxygen deprived environment prevents the wood from decaying. This material is very rare, especially in long lengths like this staff, and has a wonderful story.

The top of the staff has two pieces of matching woolly mammoth molar. That’s right, its tooth from the extinct ice age giant! The molar was recovered from the Siberian permafrost, where it was preserved in ice for at least 10,000 years, which is when the woolly mammoth went extinct. It’s potentially much older. Mammoth molar is hard almost like stone and has a beautiful pattern as seen. Underneath the top mammoth molar piece is a this layer of another ancient bog wood, Tasmanian blackwood.

On the side of the stick is a lanyard hole made out of micarta. Micarta is layers of burlap fabric bonded together with an adhesive. A lanyard can be a helpful aid during a hike. A lanyard is not provided with the stick.

This staff is 62 inches (just over 5 feet) tall, and can be shortened by request. It’s intended to be held from the side, not from the top. It is a straight stick tapering along its length. Most of the stick is an oval shape, which is better for grasping, and eventually tapers to round towards the bottom. The bottom tip is rounded and can be fitted with the included rubber tip. The finish is the same finish I use on my walking canes, it’s a durable gun stock oil finish that is intended for high-use implements.

This artistic hiking staff is ready for an adventure!
