Unique canes needs an equally unique home, this Ancient cane stand is just that. It is made exclusively from woods that are ancient. The primary wood is Ukrainian bog oak that is approximately 5,000 years old! This remarkable timber was preserved from rotting because it sank into a bog, where it rested until a few years ago when it was found and salvaged. Wood like this is called “sinker wood” it is valuable and rare material. Places like bogs and riverbeds are so low in oxygen that wood does not decay; but the oak has taken on color from mineral exposure inside the bog, it is now a warm, dark grey. The sides and feet are quartersawn to show oak’s distinctive ray figure, but the top is very special! It is highly figured “feather crotch” figured. This piece came from the “Y” between two large branches of a large tree and the grain is magnificent.

The secondary wood cane be seen from the sides as 5 lighter pins, this is ancient Kauri wood from New Zealand and it is the worlds oldest sinker wood dating back between 30-50,000 years! Perfectly preserved, even without discoloration, under the peat moss fields of New Zealand’s Northern island.

Finally, the recesses in the bottom are lined with black leather. The stand holds 5 canes or walking sticks. It can be placed directly up against a wall and the canes will not touch the wall. Contents are angled within the stand to lean back away from the front. The finish is all natural linseed oil completed with wax, it has a smooth feel and luster look.
