Midnight Stick

$600.00

Here's a walking stick that makes me think of deep space photographs, or looking up at the stars at night. It has a black dyed and resin stabilized box elder burl handle and macassar ebony shaft that is also dyed black.

Resin stabilizing is a process of pressurizing liquid resin into the wood cells to fill empty air space within the wood, the resin is later hardened resulting in a denser wood that is no longer susceptible to changes in atmospheric humidity. Stabilizing is often done in conjunction with dyeing, also done under pressure to fill the entire block of wood with color.

The handle is Box elder burl that I harvested myself in January 2020 from a local creek, it was a large, round root burl that washed out of an embankment. Box elder is naturally a light maple-like color. In most dyed blocks there are areas of natural color remaining, this is called dye rejection and it creates a beautiful contrast within the wood.

The top is suitable for most hand sizes with a maximum diameter of 2 inches (52mm) with a rounded top and gentle curvature. It is fitted with a handsome ferrule bottom and low profile rubber tip, total length measures 38.5" and can not be adjusted.
