Genuine Lignum Cane
Genuine Lignum Cane
This dark, handsome cane has some outstanding woods and ancient bone with a facinating story. The handle is Guayacan wood, otherwise known as “genuine lignum vitae”. This is the densest wood in the whole world - and it is profoundly heavy and solid! Guayacan’s common name is ““Lignum”, but since a few other closely related species have begun piggy-backing on the same name, its important to differentiate. Genuine lignum is extremely rare and a highly protected species; once my old stock of this wood runs out it’ll be gone for good.
The divider piece is the ancient part of this cane, its leg bone from an extinct ice-age horse species. The bone was recovered from the Siberian Permafrost in northern Russia. There is a narrow window of time in the summer when such pieces of natural history can be found. through years of careful drying and a stabilization process, the bone was turned into a unique material for artwork and craftsmanship. A great story to share to anyone who asked about the cane.
The shaft is Kalimantan ebony wood, an obscure variety of ebony from Borneo. Its rare, dense, dark, and everything ebony wood is prized for. It also carries a greenish hue, similar to lignum. This particular shaft is tightly striped with black, an especially nice example.
This cane feels solid, substantial, and sturdy, among my heaviest canes, it commands a meandering pace and a user of moderate to large stature. Daily use appropriate for the right user. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
The last image is of a blooming lignum vitae tree. A semi-arid region tree that grows very slowly and never very large.
