Bog Oak with B&W Ebony Cane
Bog Oak with B&W Ebony Cane
This cane is quite an eye-catcher with its high contrast, pop of red color, and bright brass. The handle is dark Ukrainian Bog Oak that is approximately 7,000 years old! Wood like this is called "sinker" wood: an oak tree lives a typical life span but when it dies and falls it is covered in peat moss or falls into a bog, both of which create an oxygen deprived environment that perfectly preserves the wood. But the oak does absorb minerals from its surroundings and the result after thousands of years is a dark color. This bog oak is a dark warm grey. Ancient wood like this is very rare and has a great story.
The divider area has two solid layers of brass with curly red rosewood in the center. This is Cochinchinensis rosewood from S E. Asia, one of the nicest and most coveted of all woods. There are thin layers of black Nigerian ebony as well.
The shaft is rare and obscure “Black and White Ebony” wood from Laos, this is the highest contrast wood in the world with a cream colored base laced with pitch black veins that run randomly along and create stunning patterns. This shaft is not consistently figured as the pictures try to show. On the right side there is exhibition quality black line figure which wraps around the front of the cane but fall off towards the left side and is mostly absent on the back/left area.
Medium weight cane but has a respectable heft to it. It could still be used by most anyone, daily use appropriate. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
