Redwood and Ebony Cane with Petrified Wood
Redwood and Ebony Cane with Petrified Wood
An eye-catching cane! It’s full of handsome woods grains, lovely chatoyance, and a story to tell. The handle is curl figured redwood from California, its likely ancient material from an old growth redwood tree that has been sustainably salvage harvested from stumps. It's been dead for at least 100 years, but could have been alive at the time of Christ. Regardless of its exact age, which is unknown, its grain is magnificent. The still images can’t capture how much movement and chatoyancy this wood has - its very dynamic and shimmery even in very dim light it seems to glow and dance. Its deep, broad curls reflect out light at different angles as the cane is moved around so its bands of light move. This chatoyance is impossible to miss its so strong for this piece.
The ends of the handle have much, much older ancient wood, its petrified wood from an estate collection of stones. Its origins are unknown but its unique looking and fits the cane perfectly. Petrified wood is millions of years old and is no longer “wood” but stone. The metal on this cane is bronze and the dark wood divider and thin accent pieces are ancient Ukrainian bog oak. The shaft is a very attractive piece of macassar striped ebony. A beautiful and harmonious cane! Its weight is medium but has a respectable weight and quality feel. it could be used and enjoyed by most any user. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
