Sinker African Birch and Olive Cane

$600.00

Here’s a really beautiful ancient cane with an abundance of interesting grain and design elements. The handle is West African Birch wood that was found sunk into a bog where it was resting for at least 1000 years, plus the age of the tree before it died and fell. Its color is darker than modern material from mineral exposure and the wood is denser for the same reason, this is actually a very dense wood and the densest ancient material I offer. The bog birch handle is chatoyant with a handsome shimmery grain, a dynamic effect only appreciated in person. One side of the handle has a dark brown portion, natural to the very center heartwood of the birch tree. The shaft is not ancient but its a beauty - wild olive from semi-arid South Africa. Its a profoundly dense and durable wood with a lovely contrast of brown and cream colors. The divider has a center of layered burlap material for an interesting detail upon close inspection. The two layers of light golden colored wood are Jindai Keyaki wood from Japan, a very unique ancient material that was buried under a volcanic eruption over 2000 years ago! Cane weight is on the heavier side for this one, it might not be as enjoyable to use for users of small stature. It is daily use appropriate and functional. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
