Amboyna Burl Pistol Grip Cane
Amboyna Burl Pistol Grip Cane
An eye-catching cane, this pistol grip style piece has lovely colors and wood grains. The handle is Amboyna burl, which is arguably the most beautiful burl wood in the world, earning its status with vibrant color and intricate grain patterns. The quality of amboyna can be measured by the density of its burl “eyes”, the vibrancy of its color, and as i’ll explain- its species. The name “Amboyna” has become a catch-all for many different species of burl wood that all share orange and red colors and similar looking grain, but not all are equal. The traditional and best amboyna is burl wood from the Narra tree, but the Narra tree has a wide range of habitats, so even burl from the Narra tree isn’t all equal. The best Narra burl I’ve ever seen is from the Vietnam/Laos region. This is where the Narra tree has the best and richest color and the densest and hardest wood. This amboyna burl is from the Narra tree from Laos. It actually started as a very chunky, and in my opinion, poorly executed tea table, so I bought that and cut it up for cane handles. It’s likely the burl was originally harvested from the forest decades ago. Good Amboyna burl is one of the most expensive woods in the world and is highly regarded everywhere. This handle isn’t the most densely figured example of Amboyna but its quality is good - its dense and has a nice orange-red color. The divider and end pieces on the handle are bronze and Nigerian ebony with a striped macassar ebony shaft from Indonesia. A medium weight cane, great for daily use but best as a balance aid, not as heavy weight-bearing cane. It measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
