Blackwood Burl Curl Cane
Blackwood Burl Curl Cane
Here is a classy combination of exquisite craftsmanship and rare, exotic woods. The handle is African blackwood which is the densest and darkest member of the rosewood family of species. This wood is incredibly dense and durable and makes excellent functional implements. Its also very attractive with an incredibly tight, slow growing grain that is very chatoyant when exposed to enough light. In most room lit environments the wood will appear black at a glance. But in brighter light its grain is easily appreciated - good thing too because the handle is burl figured! About half of the handle is covered with figured grain and extraordinarily intricate burl “eyes” patterns. African blackwood burl is extremely rare, especially on one of my largest handle designs, this is a very special offering.
The shaft is Cocobolo wood, a very popular rosewood from Central America. This example has a complex grain that is beautifully figured, It represents the best grain and color cocobolo wood has to offer. Cocobolo has been a protected species for nearly a decade now and its become quite scarce, especially Mexican cocobolo of this quality.
Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit. This cane has a hefty and very sturdy feel, its weight is above average for my work.
The last image is of the African Blackwood tree in its native range.
