"Lunar Voyage"
Few have ever walked on the moon, but now you can walk with the moon.
This extraterrestrial walking cane features a genuine piece of our closest celestial neighbor, the moon. The moon has such low gravity that meteorite impacts can eject lunar rock into space. Some of that ejected lunar rock has made its way to earth as terrestrial meteorites. Because humanity has been to the moon, sampled, and studied its rocks and geology it is possible to confirm the origins of lunar meteorites scientifically. After scientific confirmation, lunar meteorites become classified, named, and official. The end piece on the front of the cane handle is the lunar meteorite piece, named: “Northwest Africa 16372” or “NWA 16372”. Lunar meteorites are extremely rare and precious, a unique opportunity. Its possible this is the only walking cane in the entire world with a piece of the moon.
Now about the rest of this cane. The handle wood is Malagasy ebony with curl figure, with a Latin scientific name: Diospyros Perreiri. This is an extremely rare variety of ebony and is considered the blackest/darkest of all the ebonies. The tree is only found on the island of Madagascar in semi arid regions. Its a protected species and only very old material is still available that was imported long ago. The curl figure in the handle is funny, it was evident during my creative process, but as a finished piece it is almost impossible to see the curl figure because the wood is so dark. It is very rare to have curly ebony, but it can’t be appreciated. I chose Malagasy ebony for its likeness to the black of outer space.
The shaft is a different rare ebony species, black and white ebony from Laos, and I think its probably the nicest example I have ever offered as a cane shaft. This piece is totally filled with interesting grain patterns and shapes everywhere you look at it. It also has a rare effect in B&W ebony called “dalmatian B&W ebony”, where the tree grew black spots in addition to black lines. A stunning example of truly exotic wood.
A museum worthy piece of functional artwork. It has a sturdy and substantial feel, the quality of the woods are evident in the hand. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
