Macassar Ebony Staff (Mostly Black)
Macassar Ebony Staff (Mostly Black)
Here it is, often inquired after and rarely available, a tall ebony hiking staff. Fine craftsmanship, made completely by hand by myself, no extras, just rugged practicality and a beautiful wood. It is one piece of genuine macassar ebony wood that is mostly blacks with a few areas of warm brown.
Most ebony, even today, is cut and carried by hand out of remote jungle locations in a form called a “cant” or log section. Cants are usually short because of the wood’s extreme density and weight, and because this precious wood is mostly used for small creations. Once dried and trimmed the usable timber yield is even shorter in length. Offering ebony staffs in 5-6 foot lengths from my shop in New York is a special thing!
This staff is exactly 6 feet tall, and can be shortened by request. It’s intended to be held from the side at shoulder height. It is a straight stick with a gentle taper. Most of the stick is a slight oval shape, which is better for grasping, and tapers to round. The bottom and top are both rounded. It has a satiny Danish oil finish that penetrates and protects the wood, but wears gracefully for demanding usage. The surface is smooth but not so polished that the hand slips, a “just right” feel in the hand.
This hiking staff is ready for an adventure!
