Azurite & Rosewood Cane
Azurite & Rosewood Cane
This is an heirloom quality cane made from two wonderful rosewoods and a vibrant blue Azurite stone. The handle is African Blackwood, the densest and darkest member of the rosewood family of species. This wood is one of the densest in the world and durable, it makes excellent functional implements. Its also very attractive with a tight, slow growing grain that is very chatoyant when exposed to enough light. In most room lit environments the wood will appear black at a glance but in brighter light its grain is easily appreciated. The divider and shaft are old growth Cocobolo rosewood from Mexico. This is a colorful rosewood with red and orange hues, also a profoundly dense and durable wood. The end piece certainty catches the eye with its rich, vibrant blue, this is Azurite stone. Azurite is very unusual to find in large, solid pieces like this example, it usually occurs mixed in with other stones like Chrysocolla or Malachite, its a rare example.
This is a fairly heavy cane, it has a substantial feel in the hand and a solid, high-quality feel. Users of small stature may tire with use. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
The last two images are of the African Blackwood tree in its native range.
