Rosewood & Dinosaur Bone Cane

$1,750.00

A cane suitable for the king himself! This piece is made from Brazilian Kingwood, one of the finest of the rosewood species with a scientific name: Dalbergia Cearensis. “Kingwood” was the most expensive wood in Europe during the “age of exploration” and became the exclusive wood of choice for the French king’s furniture, particularly Kings Louis XIV and XV. This colorful, mostly purple hued wood is super dense, heavy, durable, and beautiful, its the second densest of the rosewood species after African Blackwood and among the densest woods in the world. This example of Kingwood has a host of different colors ranging from peachy tones to dark purples which match the stone on the end. Kingwood has not become less precious over the years, today its extremely scarce and a protected species, only very old pieces imported decades ago remain.

The lapidary element on the front of the handle is genuine fossilized bone from a dinosaur! It was recovered long ago from the Morrison formation, a layer of rock from the Jurassic period that continues to be a hotbed for fossilized dinosaur discovery. This piece of bone underwent replacement fossilization which preserved the porous cell structure of the bone which has now been completely filled in with purple agate - a particularly rare color!

The shaft is another classic rosewood, East Indian rosewood. It has a similar story to the kingwood, it too was a popular furniture wood for hundreds of years in Europe. It was such a popular and highly regarded wood that its now grown on small scale plantations, since old growth forest material is all but gone. This is old growth forest stock! It has a nice chatoyancy and some rich purple hues that go mostly uncaptured by the camera that match the dinosaur bone.

In the divider is a matching centerpiece of kingwood with layers of solid copper. The darker two layers are Bois de rose and the thin, subtle outermost layers of wood in the divider are Oliveri, both rare rosewood species.

A great high-end cane. It’s unmatched craftsmanship is felt and seen immediately. Its weight is medium, suitable for most any user to enjoy, but it feels sturdy and substantial. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
