Buloke and Ironwood Modern Cane
Buloke and Ironwood Modern Cane
One of my most commonly asked after woods is Australian Buloke wood, this cane has a gorgeous lace figured Buloke cane handle with a different Australian exotic wood called “Cooktown Ironwood” for the shaft. Buloke is known for being the hardest wood in the world, something that is measured on a scale called the “Janka scale” which measures the amount of force it takes to indent the wood to a certain depth with a steel sphere. Buloke is over 5000 lbs of force. The last image is a sample Janka scale to compare with some highly regarded exotic and domestic woods, Buloke would be off this chart. Unfortunately I’ve never seen a Janka chart that shows all wood species - it would be long. Technical stuff aside, a very functional cane and a good self defense cane too. I have a very hard time sourcing Buloke wood and I would use more of it if I could get it. It’s a protected species and all of the material I do get is salvage harvested. The quality of the grain in this material is better than most I’ve received with a very nice lace effect.
Cooktown ironwood lives up to its name with a very hard and hefty wood! This wood is very obscure and rare, not really known outside of Australia. This is a heavy cane, not something a user of small stature would enjoy using for long periods of time. Its length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
The second to last two image are from my friend in Australia who salvage harvested this Buloke wood, the pictures are from the actual spot where this cane originated.
