Ebony Claw Cane
Ebony Claw Cane
Read carefully, this piece is not like the rest of my work. Its a striking piece made from "Black and White Ebony" an especially rare species of ebony from Laos with contrasting black veins running randomly through creamy colored wood. This is the highest contrast heartwood in the world. The grain direction in the handle is opposite of typical, it runs vertically and horizontal is my normal construction. Vertical grain orientation in the handle does not offer as much strength. Its not that this is a fragile cane, but also not a cane that should be used for bearing much weight. Sometimes the wood dictates what can be done with it, and I go along! The shaft is macassar ebony that has been dyed black, I consider it a “cheat” and something that is done to just about every other ebony product out there on the world market. This piece of ebony was honestly not the prettiest piece and was mostly brown, so I decided to use dye which is something I almost never do in my work. Still, a solid ebony wood cane with a stunning look, though perhaps not as strong or totally genuine as I like to offer. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
