Oliveri Sickle Cane
Oliveri Sickle Cane
Here’s an outstanding rosewood cane full of rich colors and intricate grain patterns. The handle and shaft are both figured examples of a rare rosewood species from S. E. Asia; it’s obscure, particularly in the West, its most common name is its Latin Scientific name: Dalbergia Oliveri, or “Oliveri” for short. These pieces show an incredible variety of colors from pinks, oranges, to purples all within a chatoyant grain that catches and reflects light beautifully. My camera fails to capture the depth of color fully, and chatoyance cant be captured at all because its a dynamic effect; even still the wood looks gorgeous photographed, Its even nicer in person!
In the divider is a centerpiece of purple acacia from Australia. This is extremely obscure wood, my Australian contact drove for thousands of Kilometers through the Australian outback in search of this extremely rare acacia tree; small pieces cost a small fortune. Its barely more than a shrub growing slowly in arid environments. Its wood, often extremely flawed with cracks, is extremely dense, shows a superb color, and very nice chatoyance. Its accompanied by layers of copper and two layers of another very rare rosewood, Bois de Rose from Madagascar. This is one of my favorite woods for its very dark maroon color.
An exhibition worthy cane! Fairly heavy weight, has a substantial feel to it. Could be used daily but best considered as a special occasion piece. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
