African Blackwood Cane
African Blackwood Cane
This is an heirloom quality cane made using African blackwood. Blackwood is often confused with ebony but both the tree and its wood are very different, it is the densest and darkest member of the rosewood family of species. This wood is incredibly dense, one of the densest in the world, and durable and makes excellent functional implements. Its also very attractive with a tight, slow growing grain that is very chatoyant when exposed to enough light. In most room lit environments the wood will appear black at a glance but in brighter light its grain is easily appreciated. The contrasting light portions of the handle and shaft are the blackwood tree’s sapwood, used artistically to catch the eye. Sapwood is explained in my glossary. Over the years I have only made a handful of canes with African blackwood shafts, it is special to offer.
This cane is finished to a protective, glossy shine. A heavy cane, it feels substantial in hand. Could be burdensome to carry for someone of small stature. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
The last two images are of the African Blackwood tree in its native range.
