Malagasy Tulipwood Cane
Malagasy Tulipwood Cane
Here is both a very collectable and function cane with some super obscure rosewood species. The handle is my first of two from a small block of an extremely rare rosewood species from Madagascar called “Malagasy tulipwood” with a scientific name: Dalbergia purpurascens. In short, I happened across this wood accidently. I own some boards of “Madagascar Rosewood” which is typically Dalbergia Baronii species, which I ordered as such a few years ago. But I pulled out one small board that was not obviously a different species at first, but after working with it it was clearly unique. After some close analysis and research I identified its species as Malagasy Tulipwood. It was a marvelous find! And not entirely surprising, considering there are actually around 60 different rosewood species on Madagascar, some obscure rosewood trees got cut and bundled in with the dominant species during logging decades ago.
As for appearance its predominantly a brown color with a pinkish hue, and a bit of a purple cast to its darker lines. In the divider is a centerpiece and thin layers of Brazilian tulipwood, one of the most highly regarded among rosewood species for its amazing, vibrant colors. The two slightly darker layers of wood in the divider are Dalbergia Oliveri, another obscure rosewood species from S. E. Asia, which is the same wood as the shaft of the cane. The shaft has a lovely color and grain with a durable density.
Cane weight is medium, suitable for most anyone to use and enjoy daily. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
