Quilted Rosewood Cane
Quilted Rosewood Cane
Here is a very nice cane with a spectacular figured rosewood handle. The rosewood is Siamese rosewood from S. E. Asia, its Latin scientific name is a mouthful: Dalbergia Cochinchinensis. Siamese rosewood is in critical endangerment in the wild, particularly from poaching in recent years, as the wood demands an exorbitantly high price tag with ever increasing demand. I was fortunate to find a large stash of old Siamese rosewood in the state of Maine a few years ago. This is a wood that will be gone for good when the old stock is used up. Siamese rosewood is often very colorful, in this case a few different shades of reds and oranges. Its also a chatoyant wood with a lovely shimmering grain. This example is quilt figured, which describes the 3D ripple effect in the wood grain, which is super rare. Overall a great piece of rosewood! Its set over a shaft of a new species for me, this being my first cane with it, its red cabbage bark wood from Suriname, South America. It has a nice, decorative grain very much like a reddish/brown version of wenge wood. I don’t know how common or uncommon the tree is in its native range, but its rarely imported/exported and thus quite unique.
A great daily use cane that feel nice in the hand and has a medium weight that could be used by most anyone. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
