Voamboana Cane
Voamboana Cane
Here’s an heirloom quality cane handmade using several of the rarest rosewood species. The handle is “Voamboana rosewood”, a Dalbergia species. I’ve only ever had one opportunity to purchase this very obscure rosewood species about 8 years ago, a block large enough for two cane handles only, at which time I made the first, this cane is my last piece of Voamboana. I’m actually uncertain which exact Dalbergia rosewood species this wood is, but its definitely from Madagascar which is home to about 60 different rosewood species, most of which are totally obscure and extremely scarce. Its dense, dark, and has a purple hue to its fine and detailed grain - a beautiful wood.
In the divider and on the ends of the handle are some bright and colorful pieces of Hainan rosewood, scientific name: Dalbergia Oderifera. This is the most expensive wood in the entire world, even beads in this wood can sell for hundreds of dollars! These three pieces are exquisitely figured showing a bunch of different colors and excellent chatoyance. Also in the divider are two dark layers of Bois De Rose, scientific name: Dalbergia Marittima. This is another rare rosewood from Madagascar, and probably my favorite for its dark maroon red color and excellent chatoyance.
Finally the shaft is yes, another, rare and obscure rosewood species, this is Laotian rosewood, scientific name: Dalbergia Lanceolaria. This species is little known in the West and basically unheard-of. There are some nice areas of darker contrast in its grain along its length for some interesting visual patterns. Lanceolaria also has some subtle purple hues in its grain though its appearance overall is dark browns. Dalbergia Lanceolaria has long held the spot of my favorite of all the many rosewood species.
Overall quite a unique cane with a unique design, too. Its weight is medium and could be sued and enjoyed by most anyone. It could be used daily and its functionally excellent, but probably best considered a special occasion cane. Total length measures 38” and can be shortened to fit.
